Tooth restorations, commonly referred to as dental fillings, are meant to replace tooth structure lost to decay. Many people are not aware of the fact that fillings do not last a lifetime. As all teeth do, fillings get discoloured and pick up stains, darkening over time. Decay that is undiagnosed and untreated can progress, infecting the dental pulp, which often results in the need for a root canal.

Problems with existing fillings can be detected at a regular dental examination. Dental radiographs may be taken to help detect decay under existing dental fillings or between teeth, neither of which can be seen by simply looking at the tooth. Because bacteria and bits of food can seep down under a filling that is cracked or leaking, regular dental examinations are crucial in order to make sure further problems do not arise. During a regular dental exam, your dentist will determine if your existing fillings are intact or if any have cracked or worn away. Your dentists will use an instrument called an explorer to gently detect any worn spots around the fillings edge. This instrument will help determine if the dental filing is sealed to the tooth. If worn away, your filling can easily be replaced by scheduling a quick appointment.

When you first arrive and meet our staff, you’ll fill out your new patient paperwork. This helps our team get to know you better. We ask that you arrive 15 minutes early to complete your paperwork. Or, you can get a head start by filling out your patient forms now. Download New Patient Forms.

New patients often ask if they can have their teeth cleaned during their first visit. Your dental treatments usually begin with a follow-up visit, often scheduled as soon as the next day. We need to see you first for a comprehensive exam and then schedule adequate time with your hygienist.
