Gum Disease and Heart Health: What You Should Know

Why Should I get my teeth cleaned?

Getting your teeth cleaned is important as it reduces irritation and inflammation due to bacterial growth that can lead to heart disease or stroke.

According to a study conducted in Taiwan, those who get their teeth cleaned by a dentist or hygienist have a 24% lower risk of experiencing a heart attack, as well as a 13% lower risk of a stroke compared to those who had never received a professional dental cleaning.

According to Emily Chen, M.D., “Protection from heart disease and stroke was more pronounced in participants who got tooth scaling at least once a year.”

Additional Statistics

– People with fewer than 21 teeth have a 69% increased risk of heart attack compared to those with more teeth.

– People with an infection around the base of the tooth have a 53% increased risk of heart attack.

– People with a high incidence of gum bleeding had a 2.1% increased risk of stroke.
